The Glass Room: A Critical Tech Intervention

Today more than ever, we need to reflect critically on our relationship with technology. How do technologies impact the way we get informed and make decisions? How can we as a society face the ‘side-effects’ of an increasingly AI driven world? The Glass Room is a public exhibition that provides an interactive way for people to investigate the social impacts of technologies like Artificial Intelligence and social media platforms, and explore practical solutions to mitigate these impacts. The Glass room was developed by Tactical Tech, a creative international non-profit organization based in Berlin with decades of experience exploring the profound impact of technology on our lives. The exhibition has been shown in 71 countries with more than 500,000 people taking part. It was first brought to Canada and London, Ontario by the Starling Centre in 2024, and has been shown at the Satellite Project Space and Western University’s Weldon Library. In partnership with LPL, the Starling Centre is opening an expanded Glass Room exhibition at Central Library. Designed for all ages, the expanded Glass Room features a new immersive self-learning section. These resources guide families to explore crucial topics, like understanding how AI chatbots work and the hidden labour behind technology, recognizing the attention-grabbing designs behind popular games, and learning about the physical infrastructures that power the internet. Join LPL and Starling Centre at Central Library for the opening reception of The Glass Room on September 25th, from 6-7PM. Free parking is available for two hours at Central Library with validation.
