Renovations to Wolf Performance Hall's reception area will create a more welcoming, flexible experience for audiences while supporting one of London's busiest and most valued event spaces.

If you've attended a concert, film screening, lecture or community celebration at London Public Library's Wolf Performance Hall, you've probably spent time in the reception area just outside the theatre doors. Known as the Crush Space, it's where audiences gather before performances, connect during intermission and linger after events.

This summer, this familiar and well-used space is getting a refresh.

The renovation is designed to improve how the Crush Space works alongside Wolf Performance Hall and the Stevenson & Hunt Meeting Room at Central Library, creating a more flexible and welcoming experience for audiences, event organizers and the many community groups, businesses and organizations that use these in-demand spaces.

Wolf Performance Hall and the Stevenson & Hunt and Tonda Meeting Rooms are closed during the renovation, which is expected to be completed by early September.

The revitalization of the Wolf Performance Hall Crush Space has been made possible thanks to the generosity of the Bernard & Norton Wolf Family Foundation who matched donations from Wolf Performance Hall patrons and Library donors. We are very grateful for this support.

Where Audiences Come Together

Wolf Performance Hall is much more than a theatre. It provides Londoners with a premier venue for live music, theatre, film screenings, lectures, conferences, recitals and community celebrations.

In 2025, London Public Library’s Meetings and Events Services Department supported more than 225 large events in Wolf Performance Hall and the Library’s adjoining meeting rooms and spaces. From beloved annual events like the Forest City Film Festival and the Black History Month Gala to conferences such as TD TechCon, which welcomed more than 400 attendees, the venue continues to see growing demand.

Beyond creating a place for people to connect and celebrate, these events also generate important revenue that supports London Public Library. Every booking helps strengthen the Library's ability to serve the community while making these unique spaces available to organizations and businesses across London.

Creating a More Flexible Experience

This renovation focuses on improving how the spaces work together.

New folding glass doors will be added between the Library Passageway and the Crush Space, allowing the reception area to be enclosed for private events when needed. A new glass wall along the Stevenson & Hunt Meeting Room will also allow this room and the adjoining Crush Space to open into one larger area for receptions, intermissions and special events.

Together, these improvements will make it easier to accommodate larger audiences, improve traffic flow before and after performances, and create a more comfortable experience for guests.

Each event hosted at Wolf Performance Hall looks a little different, whether it's a performance, conference or community celebration. The goal is to ensure that people feel welcomed from the moment they arrive. These improvements will give organizers more flexibility and create a better experience for audiences, while helping ensure these spaces continue to serve London for years to come.

Additional upgrades include refreshed dressing and green rooms in Wolf Performance Hall for performers and improvements to reception area lighting and the adjoining concessions area.

Investing in the Future

As demand for Wolf Performance Hall continues to grow, these improvements will help ensure one of London's busiest and most valued event spaces continues to meet the needs of audiences, performers and event organizers for years to come. Revenue generated through Wolf Performance Hall is reinvested to support London Public Library, making projects like this an important part of the Library's commitment to responsible stewardship and long-term sustainability.

When the work is complete later this summer, visitors can expect the same high-quality performances, conferences and community celebrations they know and love, now supported by a more flexible, functional and welcoming gathering space.
