Expanding opportunities for language learning across London

For many newcomers, their first challenge upon arriving in London is learning a new language. The Library’s English to Go bags have been a powerful tool in helping English language learners do just that, offering everything needed to build language skills and confidence, one bag at a time.

Now, thanks to funding from the Library Settlement Partnership (LSP), this Library resource is expanding in exciting ways. 63 brand-new English to Go bags and 65 refreshed bags have just been released across the city, offering even more opportunities for learners to study English independently or with family and friends.

New Kits for Every Goal

Each English to Go bag contains carefully selected materials to help learners practice reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

These bags have been very popular - they've been borrowed more than 2,000 times since they were introduced, according to Kevin Davidson, the Library's Coordinator of Collections Services. We've heard from English language learners about additional content that would be helpful to them, such as testing programs, writing and employment.

In response to this feedback, the refreshed collection features updated Level 1 and Level 2 kits, along with brand-new bags focused on CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), writing, and employment skills.

Designed to meet the evolving needs of London’s growing newcomer community, these additions support users as they prepare for language exams, strengthen writing skills, and build workplace readiness. The bags are now available at Library branches hosting LSP service across the city, including Beacock, Bostwick, Cherryhill, Jalna, Masonville, Sherwood, and Stoney Creek branches, ensuring these resources reach the communities that benefit from them most.

Supported by Strong Community Partnerships

This major update was made possible through the support of LUSO Community Services, South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre, and Northwest London Resource Centre, all of which are dedicated to empowering newcomers through education and connection.

Manager of Customer Services & Branch Operations, Chelsie Abraham, says the updated kits are a great example of what strong community partnerships can achieve: “We’ve combined funding, expertise, and a shared commitment to inclusion to create resources that make learning English accessible for everyone,” says Abraham. “Together, we’re helping newcomers build language skills and confidence as they settle into their new communities and make Canada their home.”

Whether learners are preparing for an exam, practicing conversational English, or improving their writing, English to Go bags offer the flexibility to learn anywhere: at home, at the Library, or on the go. These kits are more than just study materials; they’re a starting point for connection and confidence. For many Londoners, they represent a first step toward community, opportunity, and belonging.
