Our deepest thanks goes out to the Friends of the London Public Library who, joined by Mayor Josh Morgan, Ward 7 Councillor Corrine Rahman, and Library Board members and staff, today announced a $100,000 gift to support Sherwood's new children's area. These funds were raised by the hard-working volunteers of the Friends through their ongoing, dedicated work operating the Friends Book Store at Central Library and their Annual Giant Book Sale, which this year takes place from October 17-19 at Centennial Hall.
The Friends believe deeply in the value of libraries. Since 1995, the Friends have supported vital, value-added programs and projects at London Public Library, such as afterschool clubs and healthy snack programs, critical early literacy programs and many other programs for children, youth and families. As Carmen Sprovieri, the long-time President of the Friends of the London Public Library shared at the announcement event, “Libraries are so important. They are really the backbone and the pillar of democracy. They are open to all. They serve everyone.” The Friends are committed to ensuring that all Londoners have access to impactful Library resources.
When you step into the newly renovated Sherwood Branch Library, you can’t miss the new, welcoming children’s area. The support of the Friends has helped the Library create a large, playful and interactive space that features a Workshop, low bookshelves that make it easy to find great books for children, comfortable seating for families and toys, tools and other materials that will provide children and families with a place to read, learn, create and play. An enriching place in their neighbourhood that is free to visit and open to all.
The Sherwood Branch Library construction project began in late January and the Branch soft-opened on September 5, with many finishing touches still being put in place. A Grand Reopening Celebration takes place at Sherwood Branch Library on Saturday, October 4, from 11am-4pm, with free activities for families.
Since reopening earlier this month, Sherwood Branch and the new children’s area have already become a popular destination for children, families and youth, welcoming hundreds of visitors daily.
